What is Cigna? Does Cigna cover therapy?
Cigna is a global health service provider dedicated to improving people’s health and quality of life. More than 95 million people from all over the world are reached by it. Cigna covers various therapies proven effective in helping those with mental health issues, including those for anxiety disorders and depression.
Cigna Therapy Coverage
Most Cigna plans cover therapy, also called counseling or psychotherapy, as part of their behavioral health benefits. Therapy is a useful form of treatment that helps people deal with and get over a wide range of mental health problems, such as anxiety, depression, trauma, or problems in their relationships. It can be done in person or through telehealth platforms, which gives people options and makes things easier.
Cigna does cover therapy services, but it’s important to look at the details of your plan to know how it works in your case. Your therapy benefits can be affected by things like the type of plan you have, whether or not you are in a network, and how your policy is written. Here are some important things to think about:
- In-Network Providers: Therapists and other mental health professionals are part of Cigna’s network of preferred providers. If you choose a therapist in your insurance network, you can get the most out of your coverage and pay less out-of-pocket.
- Out-of-Network Coverage: Some Cigna plans may also cover some therapy services from providers not in their network. But reimbursement rates and coverage levels may differ for providers outside the network, and you may have to pay a bigger share of the costs.
- Copayments or Coinsurance: Therapy sessions may require copayments or coinsurance, depending on your Cigna plan. These are the parts of the cost that you will have to pay for yourself. Read the details of your plan to find out the exact amounts.
- Pre-Authorization Requirements: Some Cigna plans may require therapy services to be approved beforehand. This means that you may need permission from Cigna before starting therapy to ensure you are covered.
To get accurate and detailed information about your Cigna therapy coverage, it’s best to look at your insurance policy documents, log in to your online member account, or call Cigna customer service directly. They can tell you about the mental health benefits of your plan, such as whether therapy is covered, copayments, who is in the network, and if there are any other requirements.

Does Cigna Cover Rehab?
Yes, Cigna rehab coverage may include mental health rehab. The amount of coverage can vary depending on your insurance plan and the kind of Cigna rehab services you need.
Does Cigna cover inpatient rehab? Most of the time, Cigna covers both inpatient and outpatient rehab. Inpatient rehab involves staying at a facility for some time for intensive treatment and support. In contrast, outpatient rehab lets people get treatment while living at home or in a supportive environment.
Cigna covered rehab may include:
- Residential treatment is an inpatient program that gives people recovering from mental health issues structured care, therapy, counseling, and support.
- Medication-Assisted Treatment (MAT): Coverage for FDA-approved drugs used with counseling and behavioral therapies to treat substance use disorders.
Cigna Therapy Coverage
Cigna therapy coverage includes a wide range of mental health services that can help people feel better emotionally. Cigna usually pays for outpatient therapy, which can be done one-on-one, in groups, or with the whole family. Therapy methods like cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT), dialectical behavior therapy (DBT), and psychodynamic therapy are covered. Cigna may also cover teletherapy, which lets people get therapy without leaving their homes. It’s important to look over the details of your Cigna plan, such as copayments, deductibles, and any limits on the number of therapy sessions covered.
Cigna insurance usually covers Cigna counseling services, but you should look at the details of your Cigna therapy coverage plan to see how much is covered. Cigna counseling services can be beneficial in dealing with mental health problems, and Cigna knows how important it is to give its members access to these services.
Cigna has a large network of mental health professionals, such as counselors and therapists, who are in-network providers. These providers have agreements with Cigna, meaning members often pay less out-of-pocket than they would with providers not in the network.
Individual therapy, couple therapy, family therapy, and group therapy are all types of Cigna counseling services that Cigna therapy coverage insurance may cover. These services are meant to help with various mental health issues and problems, such as anxiety, depression, relationship problems, managing stress, and more.
Review your policy details or call us to determine if your Cigna plan covers counseling services. We can tell you about your plan’s network, any copayments or deductibles you need to pay, and any specific rules or limits for counseling services.

Cigna Inpatient Mental Health Treatment Service And Costs
Cigna covers inpatient mental health treatment services, but the exact coverage and costs depend on your insurance plan. It’s important to look over the details of your plan or call Cigna to find out how your coverage works.
Inpatient mental health care is usually given in a hospital or residential facility, where people stay longer to get intensive care and support. These programs provide a structured environment with medical and mental health care 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, as well as therapy sessions, medication management, and other therapeutic activities.
Some of the costs that come with inpatient mental health care are:
- Deductible: You must pay out of your pocket before your insurance coverage starts. Depending on your plan, the deductible is a certain amount you must pay before Cigna starts paying for your costs.
- Coinsurance or Copayment: Even if you’ve paid your deductible, you may still have to pay some of the costs. This can be a fixed amount (copayment) or a percentage of the total bill (coinsurance) for each day or service.
- Out-of-Pocket Maximum: This is the most you’ll have to pay for deductibles, coinsurance, and copayments during the policy period. Once you reach this limit, Cigna will pay for all your covered services at no cost.
|Inpatient Rehab Coverage Estimates|
|Cigna Insurance Bronze plans||Typically, you have 0% coinsurance for in-network providers, meaning Cigna will pick up the costs after you pay your plan’s deductible in full. Some plans will help cover costs for out-of-network services, while others may not.|
|Cigna Insurance Silver plans||In-network programs’ coinsurance usually falls 30 to 50 percent after the deductible is met. Out-of-network services may or may not be covered, depending on your state.|
|Cigna Insurance Gold plans||Coinsurance for in-network plans can range from 20 to 50 percent after the deductible. Like the other plans, out-of-network providers may or may not be covered depending on the state in which the policy was issued.|
|Cigna Insurance Platinum plans||10 to 30 percent coinsurance after meeting the plan’s deductible. Some plans may cover out-of-network programs at a higher coinsurance percentage.|

When you use an inpatient rehab program, you stay in a facility to get the therapy and care you need to get better. You must go to a rehab program and stay there, just like in a hospital, until your treatment is done. Depending on your needs, your stay could be anywhere from a few days to a month or more.
These short-term programs may be offered in stand-alone rehabilitation hospitals, specialized wings of acute-care hospitals, or skilled nursing facilities. Individuals admitted to inpatient rehab facilities receive comprehensive rehabilitative care via a tightly-coordinated, physician-led multi-disciplinary team of rehabilitative professionals. The team will typically include rehabilitative physicians and specialists, rehabilitation nursing staff, physical, occupational, and speech therapists, nutritionists, social workers, counselors, and care coordinators, among others, according to each patient’s specific needs.
If accepted into an inpatient rehab program, you will work with therapists for at least three hours a day to help you get better. You can also expect access to in-house rehabilitation equipment, facilities, and staff during your stay. This will allow you to work toward your rehabilitation goals in a safe, supervised environment between therapy sessions.
You will have medical care and monitoring 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. You will also get help with pain and wounds if you need it. All meals and personal care will be taken care of, and many inpatient rehab centers offer extras like indoor pools and/or spas, internet access, and/or places to play.
